The Nevada Caucus

Tomorrow is the Nevada Caucus! The younger population of the United States has been notorious for being apathetic towards politics. We need to amend this stereotype and show up in record numbers tomorrow here in Nevada and in other primaries across the country. This is your country too...do not let our future be determined by the older generation!

On the democratic side we have Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Mike Gravel, Dennis Kucinich, and Barack Obama. Clinton, Obama, and Edwards are the frontrunners in the democratic race. Click on the candidates names to access their websites which display their plans as president of the United States. The democratic caucus starts at 11am this Saturday. You can find your democratic caucus site in Nevada at http://www.nvdemscaucus.com

The republican side has a diverse set of candidates who are Rudy Guiliani, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, John McCain, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson. This race is wide open as of now with John McCain, Mike Huckabee, and Mitt Romney currently leading. Click on these candidates names for more information on them. The republican caucus starts at 8:30am this Saturday. You can find your republican caucus site at http://www.nvgopcaucus.com/

Below is a video on how both caucuses work if you are still confused about tomorrow. Enjoy!

Hofbrauhaus Las Vegas

My friends have been talking about this new restaurant in Las Vegas called Hofbrauhaus during our poker games, when we are at a hookah lounge, everywhere! I was just like Hofbra...what? They explained to me it was a re-creation of the original Hofbrauhaus in Munich, Germany, and that it is the place where Oktoberfest is held in Germany. After I learned what Hofbrauhaus was, the scenes from Beerfest started popping up in my mind. Unfortunately I am only 20 and cannot drink yet. My friend and I headed over to the Hofbrauhaus in Las Vegas anyways for lunch because we heard the food was phenomenal and at the same time reasonable.

To my surprise Hofbrauhaus was the size of a Las Vegas motel. Entering the restaurant was even a trek having to scale a walkway along the side of this enormous building. When we finally entered the building, we were greeted by a hostess dressed up in an outfit similar to the St. Pauli beer girl. Heres the St. Pauli beer girl for you beer virgins:

Our waitress was dressed in the same outfit. Requirements to work at the Hofbrauhaus as a waitress must include a bra size of a D or higher no joke. Our restaurant experience was already good without even ordering our food yet! The dining hall we were seated in was very impressive with a church-like ceiling and large glass windows. The tables were large and wooden, accompanied by their own publication. Here is a picture of the inside of the restaurant:

My and friend I decided to go with their lunch special that day, which was a giant pork sausage in a baguette with sauerkraut and fries for $9.95. Other lunch specials are dishes such as a currywurst sausage with fries, roast pork with onion gravy, chicken melt in a kaiser roll, and beer battered ocean codfish. Our sausages came out within 10 minutes of us ordering our meal. The service was friendly and fast. Now how were these giant sausages? They were great, my friends did not lie to me about the quality of the food. The sausage was over a foot long in a baguette with a generous helping of fries. This meal could have only gotten better if I could have had one of their wonderful beers. Too bad we are one of the few countries in the world with a drinking age of 21... Here is a picture of my meal:

Hofbrauhaus is a great place to get a filling lunch for a reasonable price. With the authentic German beer hall as your environment, it cannot get any better unless you are lucky to be over 21. Next time you are near the Las Vegas Strip and have a hearty appetite during lunchtime, head over to the Hofbrauhaus located on 4510 Paradise Road. Hofbrauhaus also serves dinner and has events on the weekend. Check out their website here.

Chandelier Hookah Lounge

While on my non-native side of town in Las Vegas, Green Valley, my friend and I came across a hookah lounge called Chandelier. Chandelier is a restaurant and hookah lounge that serves Mediterranean fare and hookahs. In this year's Las Vegas Review Journal's Best of Las Vegas, Chandelier was rated as the best hookah lounge in town, here is the link to the article.

We were welcomed warmly into the restaurant by the owner. After greeting us, he led us to the hookah lounge located in the back of the restaurant. My friend and I were quite pleased with the hookah smoking area. Leather couches, golden cloths, and comfy pillows lined the hookah lounge. They even had a VIP area within the hookah lounge. The VIP area had a large LCD television and water filled couches(like a waterbed)! Here is a picture of where we sat:

So what about the hookahs!?! My friend and I wanted to try something out of the ordinary so the waiter suggested caramel vanilla banana, which sounded good to us. Their hookah menu consisted of almost every traditional hookah fruit flavor. Nothing extraordinary stuck out from the choices we were given though. After taking a couple puffs of our hookah, I was not that impressed with how the hookah smoked and tasted. The smoke was thin and the flavor was a bit bland, but this could have been because of the odd flavor combination we chose or poor preparation that can easily be remedied. If you don't smoke hookah much then these hookahs are fine, given the great environment. Even better is that their hookahs are 15 bucks each. Here is a picture of the hookah we smoked:

Since Chandelier is on the other side of town for me, I doubt I'll be frequenting the lounge much, but if you are looking for a decent hookah lounge with a classy and hip environment to go to near Green Valley, head on over. Chandelier is located on 2980 St. Rose Parkway in a shopping center. A link to their website which contains hours and a more detailed description of their food menu can be found here.

Club froZEN75

Many people in the 18-20 age range in Las Vegas have been seeking out a nightclub that caters to their age group. I heard through word of mouth about a club called froZEN 75 in Green Valley located at 4427 East Sunset Road. This club is open to ages 14 and over from 8pm to 11:15pm on Fridays and Saturdays, then after 11:15 it turns into an 18 and over nightclub. General admission is 15 dollars, but if you have a student I.D. of any kind it is 12 dollars.

My adventure at club froZEN 75 started with being asked to pull over our car as we entered their parking lot to be searched for weapons. We were first patted down as we got out of our car. Then they proceeded to check the trunk of the car and also the glove department. I am assuming they must do this to keep the club safe, which is completely fine with me. We then parked and stood in line for the club to be patted down yet again. At this point I thought the security process was over board, but its all in the name of safety. At least they are precocious instead of lax on security. We had to ditch our keys and cigarettes to them before we went into the club(They held them at the front desk for us).

Now onto to the club... The lady at the cashier was friendly and upbeat, but she failed to mention the student discount to me so I ended up paying the 15 bucks to get in. If you do go and you are a student make sure to mention the student discount. The inside was well-decorated and clean with leather couches on some of the walls. Fog machines surrounded the dance floor with lights flashing as well. Surprisingly, the environment was impressive for an 18 and over club. I was expecting a dark room with just a DJ playing some music. This club also has VIP areas you can rent out if you are going to froZEN 75 with a large group of friends. Something you cannot find at most 18 and over clubs.

I may have gone on an off night but the party wasn't crackin' at all. Most of the guys were standing on the wall twiddling their thumbs. This was somewhat understandable because it was a giant "cockfest", pardon my French. Many of the girls there were either with their friends that happened to be guys or their boyfriends. I have only been here once though this may not be the case all the time. On a lighter note, the music was great. froZEN 75 played everything from hip-hop to techno. This club has potential to be a great place, but just didn't do it for me the night I went mainly because of the crowd they had that night. One of the bouncers told me that it was an off night and that the crowd is usually much better.

Club frozen 75 is the closest you will get to a 21+ Las Vegas nightclub if you are underage and a guy. If you are bored and with a group of your friends that are in the mood for some dancing head over to Club froZEN 75. Do not go looking to hook-up or dance with some random people, try a house party instead.

I Bling in My Green Tea

Tapping into my Asian roots I decided to venture to Chinatown in Las Vegas to check out the spots in that area of town. I am a big fan of boba teas so I decided to hit up a place called Tea Station(signs says Tea Planet). To my surprise this spot not only offered a plethora of boba teas but also some very interesting hot teas. They had everything from a dragonwell green tea to a rose oolong tea. Also Tea Station had every boba tea flavor you could think of on the menu. You may be wondering what boba tea is. Boba tea can be a milk tea or regular tea with boba, which are chewy tapioca balls. Variations on boba tea have also been created such as iced coffee with boba and fruit smoothies with boba.

The inside of Tea Station in Las Vegas is Asian themed with teas and tea pots lining the walls. Asian themed music plays in the background setting the mood for a very relaxed experience. You can either sit down and have the tea served to you or get it to go. Hot teas come in a tea pot, and boba teas come in a glass. The amount of tea you get for the price is great. One pot of tea costing me 5 bucks allowed me to fill up my tea cup about 5 or 6 times. The boba teas, which were also around 5 bucks, come in a tall and large glass. Tea Station also offers a variety of finger foods to go with your tea. If you are feeling adventurous try out the squid jerky or the green onion pancakes with your cup of tea.

The teas themselves are very flavorful without tasting like hot water with a tinge of tea flavor. When I went to Tea Station I opted for the Dragonwell Green Tea being a green tea fan. Most green teas I have at other tea places are very bland and do not have flavor to them at all. At Tea Station the green tea was flavorful and only got bitter by the end of the pot. I unfortunately did not have the boba teas, but my friends did. They vouched that these boba teas were some of the better ones they have had in town.

Tea Station is a great place to start or end your night on the town. It is located in Chinatown right next to the Las Vegas Strip at 4355 Spring Mountain Road. If you are with your friends or that special someone looking for a place to go before or after a crazy night in Las Vegas, head on over to Tea Station for a change from the coffee house.

Pinballing for Charity

While out exploring Las Vegas with my friends on Friday night we came upon a rundown strip mall next to the Tropicana Cinemas. In this strip mall there was a store or what appeared as a store with retro pinball machines and arcade games from my childhood. This place was the Pinball Hall of Fame. As we entered, a flashback of the old pizza and arcade place called Pistol Pete's ran through my mind. I used to spend my weekends playing arcade games and eating pizza at Pistol Pete's. Minus the pizza the Pinball Hall of Fame reminded me of this time in my life. Immediately, I took out my wallet and got some change to begin reliving my childhood at the Pinball Hall of Fame.

The Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas is a museum of pinball and arcade games from back in the day. They have everything from Ms. Pacman to The Simpsons(My favorite arcade game). Each game is 25 cents to play until you lose. Definitely a cheap and fun place to go to if you are strapped for cash. Some of the pinball machines were before my day, but were surprisingly entertaining. Give me Recreativo's Impacto over Halo any day of the week. At least I don't have to spend hours playing the game to have a fighting chance to be good.

The Pinball Hall of Fame boasts over 150 pinball machines, arcade games, and other throwback arcade machines. Here is a list of them all. This place is run by Tim Arnold a pinball machine enthusiast who's dream was to open a pinball arcade like The Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. While we were there I saw him meticulously working with his prized pinball machines. The simple fact that this venue was created as his passion instead of a business venture gives the place a great vibe. Better yet all of their profits are donated to charity.

Driving around the Las Vegas Strip one night looking for something to do?...Go off the beaten path and visit the Pinball Hall of Fame on 3330 East Tropicana Avenue in Las Vegas for a fun, nostalgic, and charitable experience.

The Peppermill Restaurant: Old Las Vegas in a Diner

Las Vegas is known for being a place where you can eat for a reasonable price and still get good food. While at the Consumer Electronics Show, The Peppermill caught my eye as a place I needed to check out. The Peppermill is located on the Las Vegas Strip at 2985 Las Vegas Blvd. next to the Riviera Hotel and Casino. It has a rainbow-themed neon sign that reminded me of the Old Las Vegas strip before the newer casinos moved into town. Nostalgia set in and I was off to The Peppermill.

As I walked into The Peppermill the nostalgic appearance of the outside of the restaurant matched the inside with its neon speckled carpet, fake vegetation, and dim environment. The menu was not very diverse, but had interesting variations on diner fare such as the asparagus omelet which I happened to get and turned out to be very good. The prices of the food were very reasonable at 10 - 15 dollars for most meals on the menu. However, some of the main entrees were closer to the 20 - 25 dollar range. What was even better is that the portion size was very generous for the price of the meal. My asparagus omelet with hollandaise sauce covered half the plate with hash browns covering the other half along with a toasted bagel. As far as the service at The Peppermill, the waitress we had was very friendly, and always made sure we were accommodated. With all that considered, The Peppermill is the 24 hour diner to go to if you are looking for a better option than Denny's in Las Vegas.

It's late Thursday night and you just got done chilling with your friends...You and your friends are hungry but sick of Denny's...Head down to Las Vegas Strip and go to The Peppermill for a nostalgic diner experience.

CES 2008: A Nerd's Wet Dream

Every year the Consumer Electronics Show comes to the Las Vegas Convention Center next to the Las Vegas Hilton. Those of you who live here can witness the chaos that is CES down on the Las Vegas strip. I happened to be lucky enough to attain a badge to attend the convention this year. For the past couple of days I have been at the convention bringing you guys footage on what is going on inside. There are two more days left of CES 2008. Shortly after tomorrow I will post up pictures, videos, and an article on what was going on inside. A brief overview on what I have seen so far is a car that can drive itself, the newest technology from companies such as, Intel and Microsoft, a "pimped out" boat, and plenty of hot models :) . So stay tuned for this exciting look into CES 2008 in Las Vegas!

Red Hookah Lounge

Red Hookah Lounge is definitely the most stylish lounge I have been to in Las Vegas, because of its East Asian themed interior design. This hookah lounge has a dress code to match with its stylish environment, which is collared shirts and no shorts. Be sure to be dressed well before you come to Red. The lounge is divided into two sections, one being an open section with booths and pillows, and the other section being private booths that can be closed off with a curtain. At the time I visited Red, the private booths were still under construction so I am not able to testify on how they are, but I did sit in the open section of the lounge. The pillows and booths were a perfect match for smoking a hookah because of how comfortable they are. You really feel like a Sultan in an East Asian themed palace. Trance and psychedelic types of music are playing at a perfect volume in the background giving a very chill vibe to the lounge.

Now for the most important part of a hookah lounge, the hookahs. The hookahs themselves are also very stylish matching with the design of Red. They are normal sized with a red glass base and a golden stem. Their flavors are fairly unique with flavors such as rocky road ice cream to white russian. Chad ,the hookah master, at Red is just a genuinely good guy that will make you feel right at home. He accepts hookah flavor mixing challenges. Some of his oddest accomplishments are creating the flavors orange chicken and pepper steak... My only qualm with Red as far as hookahs is that sometimes they can smoke harsh or taste a bit coaly. But Red is always willing to make sure your hookah smokes to your liking. The prices of their hookahs range from 15-30 bucks. A bit pricey, but if you would like to go to an upscale hookah lounge in Las Vegas, this is the place. Along with your hookah you can order a drink. Red has a good selection of energy drinks that you have probably never heard of, but they are very tasty.

Red is "the spot" for an upscale hookah smoking experience in Las Vegas. It may be a bit pricey for the quality of hookah, but the environment is worth the price if you are willing to spend some extra money. Red Hookah Lounge is located on 3330 East Tropicana Avenue in Las Vegas. It is located in a shopping center off of Tropicana Avenue and is somewhat hidden from view if driving on the street. Just pull into the shopping center in order to find it.
For specials, events, and more information on Red visit their website at http://www.myspace.com/redhookahlasvegas.

Looking for that upscale nightclub spot in Las Vegas to take your date or go to with a group of friends, but you and your friends are under 21? Head on over to Red Hookah Lounge for a psychedelic experience.

Love and Plane Spotting

Sometimes the better things in life are free... The last two articles focused on things to do in Las Vegas when you have some extra cash, so I figured that I should reveal a place you can go to relax and have good time for free. If you haven't been to the airplane spotting area at Las Vegas's airport, Mccarran International Airport, you have definitely missed out on a great place to go to for a free night out.

The plane spotting area at Mccarran International Airport in Las Vegas is located in an alcove off of Sunset Road right outside the Las Vegas strip. The plane spotting area is placed right next to the 25L runway of the airport. From what I have seen in the past, airplanes generally take off from and also land on this runway. It is breathtaking watching these enormous planes land so gracefully onto the ground and also take-off into the sky.

I found this place to be a great place to take that special friend or significant other...Ironically the Las Vegas Review Journal rates this spot as the best place to hook-up in Las Vegas! Forget that 100 dollar dinner at the Bellagio, this is the place to go for a hot date. For the loners out there, this is a great place to sit peacefully and reflect on life.

You are broke and you have a date on Sunday night...No need to worry!...Take your date to Mccarran International Airport's plane spotting alcove for a guaranteed happy ending ;)

Pho Fer Ya in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is notorious for its expensive tabs at restaurants near the strip, but there are some quality places to eat if you are willing to travel outside the strip. This is the first of my reviews on good and reasonable eats off the Las Vegas strip.

Being a college student has allowed me to appreciate instant noodles as a perfectly "nutritious" dinner. So when I came across a Vietnamese dish named Pho(pronounced "fuh"), I fell in love. Pho is a Vietnamese soup that has a flavored broth, rice noodles, scallions and cilantro, and slices of beef. The beef can be substituted with chicken, shrimp, or can be left out for vegetarians. What makes this dish even more appealing is that it is served with a plate of basil, bean sprouts, peppers, and limes. You can add as much or as little of these condiments to your soup as you want. I also garnish my soup with hoisin sauce and Sriracha hot pepper sauce. Pho is Top Ramen on steroids!

So where can we find this Barry Bonds of instant noodles in Las Vegas you ask? There are two Vietnamese restaurants that I have been to off the strip that serve this dish:

Bamboo Bistro: This is my favorite of the two pho restaurants because of its cozy atmosphere and high quality pho. It is located on 8560 West Desert Inn Road. Their phos come in three sizes small, large, and extra large. The small is pretty small for those with small appetites. Large is the size of pho at most Vietnamese restaurants and will fill you up. Those with heartier appetites can try the extra large Pho. The phos are around 7 dollars making them a little more expensive than the other restaurants, but the service is great and the restaurant is very clean. Definately a must-go if you are willing shell out a little extra money.

Pho So 1: This pho restaurant is located on 4745 Spring Mountain Road. This place is usually very busy at nights. The tables are placed very close to one another causing you to pretty much touch elbows with the person next to you unless you are in a booth. The meat used in the pho seems to be of a lesser quality with some gristle and fat, but the pho as a whole is decent. Other than that the pho is good enough if you are looking for a cheaper alternative. Phos here range from 5-7 dollars. If you are an adventurous person this restaurant offers tripe and tendon in their phos as well. When I come here I usually opt for their table-top barbeque which is excellent for a group of friends. Pho So 1 is a good place to go for a more authentic pho.

Saturday night...thinking about that dream girl or guy in your chemistry class?...Call him or her up and grab some Pho in Las Vegas!

First Review: Azuza Hookah Lounge

The hookah craze in Las Vegas has grown exponentially in the past couple of years. Lounges have been popping up from Summerlin to Green Valley. Hookah lounges are basically bars for the 18-20 year old crowd making them great places to socialize. If you don't know what hookah is visit this site for detailed information on it...http://www.hookahcompany.com/cmenuitem_1.htm. Briefly, hookah is a water pipe that can be loaded with tobacco that can be flavored with anything from peach to hazelnut. Do not be deceived by people saying hookah smoking is safer than cigarette smoking, because in the end hookah smoking is STILL smoking tobacco. But I am a huge advocate of everything in moderation is perfectly alright.

Anyways let's get back to the venue that this article is reviewing, Azuza Hookah Lounge, located at 6340 West Charleston Boulevard across from the College of Southern Nevada Charleston campus. Azuza has a very hip vibe to it with a bar area that has individual hookahs and severals areas for groups of customers to share a hookah. The hookahs seem to be well-taken care of and clean. What makes Azuza stand apart from other hookah lounges is its flavor menu. They have a multitude of single flavors plus very interestingly named mixed flavors. My personal favorite was their flavor named, Fruit Loops. Their hookahs smoked well and the service was good. During the week the lounge seems to be quieter, but on the weekends it can get packed. Music in the lounge ranges from rap to techno. At times the music was so loud I could barely hold a conversation with my friends. Unfortunately, this lounge can get pricey as well with the requirement of a drink purchase with your hookah. Hookahs are around 15 dollars plus the price of your drinks. But in my opinion the prices are justified given the quality of the hookahs. I have not smoked a better hookah in town.

Azuza not only serves hookah, but also serves exotic teas from a hot flowering green tea to iced tea. The teas seem bland in my opinion and aren't worth the price. Go with a bottle of water instead.

If you are sitting alone at home bored on a Friday night and have some extra cash to spend, call up your friends or head down by yourself to Azuza Hookah Lounge. It is definitely worth a try if you like to smoke hookah. Here is their website if you would like information on their times and specials...http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=108553640

What's up Las Vegas!

I created this blog specifically for the 18-20 year old crowd in Las Vegas. As many of us know we are limited in what we can do in Las Vegas because most of the the nightlife here is catered towards the 21 year old and over crowd. In this blog I will review and reveal nightlife catered towards the 18-20 year old crowd and other things we can do in Vegas. From hiking in Red Rock Canyon to the many hookah bars that we have in Vegas, I will try to provide cool spots to go to for the 18-20 year old crowd in Las Vegas.
